Etsy Fee Structure: The Four Layers
Etsy applies four distinct fees to each transaction. Understanding each one is critical for pricing your products profitably.
1. Listing Fee — $0.20 per item
Every item you list on Etsy costs $0.20. This fee is charged when the listing goes live and auto-renews every 4 months until you cancel it. If the item sells, the listing fee for the next quantity is charged immediately. For items with multiple variations, you pay one listing fee per listing, not per variation.
2. Transaction Fee — 6.5% of total sale amount
Etsy takes 6.5% of the total amount the buyer pays, including the item price and shipping. This is calculated on the grand total, not just the item price. If you offer free shipping, the transaction fee applies to the item price only.
3. Payment Processing Fee — 3% + $0.25 per transaction
If you use Etsy Payments (required in most countries), Etsy charges 3% of the total sale amount plus a $0.25 fixed fee per transaction. This covers credit card processing, PayPal, and other payment methods. In some countries, the percentage varies (e.g., 4% in countries where Etsy Payments is newer).
4. Offsite Ads Fee — 15% of item price (optional)
If you participate in Etsy's Offsite Ads program and a buyer purchases through an ad Etsy placed on Google, Facebook, or other platforms, you pay 15% of the item price. This fee is on the item price only, not shipping. Offsite ads are mandatory for sellers making over $10,000/year; optional for smaller sellers.
How to Use the Calculator
- Enter your Item Price — the price the buyer pays for the product (excluding shipping)
- Enter Shipping Charged — the shipping fee you charge the buyer
- Verify the Listing Fee ($0.20 default), Transaction Fee (6.5% default), Payment Fee (3% default), and Payment Fixed Fee ($0.25 default)
- Check the Offsite Ads box if the sale came through an Etsy-placed external ad
- Click Calculate Etsy Fees to see a full breakdown and net proceeds
The calculator shows each fee component individually, the total fee, your net proceeds, and your effective margin percentage.
Fee Calculation Formula
Total Fee = Listing Fee + Transaction Fee + Payment Processing Fee + Offsite Ads Fee
Where:
- Listing Fee = $0.20 (fixed per item)
- Transaction Fee = (Item Price + Shipping) × 6.5%
- Payment Processing Fee = (Item Price + Shipping) × 3% + $0.25
- Offsite Ads Fee = Item Price × 15% (if applicable)
Net Proceeds = (Item Price + Shipping) − Total Fee
Margin = (Net Proceeds ÷ Total Revenue) × 100
Worked Examples
Example 1: Standard Sale ($25 item, $6 shipping)
| Fee Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing Fee | Fixed | $0.20 |
| Transaction Fee | $31 × 6.5% | $2.02 |
| Payment Processing | $31 × 3% + $0.25 | $1.18 |
| Offsite Ads | Not applicable | $0.00 |
| Total Fees | $3.40 | |
| Net Proceeds | $31.00 − $3.40 | $27.60 |
| Effective Fee Rate | $3.40 ÷ $31.00 | 10.9% |
Example 2: Offsite Ads Sale ($50 item, $10 shipping)
| Fee Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing Fee | Fixed | $0.20 |
| Transaction Fee | $60 × 6.5% | $3.90 |
| Payment Processing | $60 × 3% + $0.25 | $2.05 |
| Offsite Ads | $50 × 15% | $7.50 |
| Total Fees | $13.65 | |
| Net Proceeds | $60.00 − $13.65 | $46.35 |
| Effective Fee Rate | $13.65 ÷ $60.00 | 22.8% |
Without the offsite ads fee, the effective rate would be 10.3%. The offsite ad more than doubles the fee burden.
Example 3: Low-Price Sale ($5 item, $3 shipping)
| Fee Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing Fee | Fixed | $0.20 |
| Transaction Fee | $8 × 6.5% | $0.52 |
| Payment Processing | $8 × 3% + $0.25 | $0.49 |
| Total Fees | $1.21 | |
| Net Proceeds | $8.00 − $1.21 | $6.79 |
| Effective Fee Rate | $1.21 ÷ $8.00 | 15.1% |
Low-priced items suffer a disproportionately high fee rate because the fixed listing fee ($0.20) and payment fee ($0.25) represent a larger share of revenue.
Etsy Fee Comparison Table
| Item Price | Shipping | Total Revenue | Total Fees | Net Proceeds | Fee Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $5 | $3 | $8 | $1.21 | $6.79 | 15.1% |
| $10 | $5 | $15 | $1.93 | $13.07 | 12.9% |
| $25 | $6 | $31 | $3.40 | $27.60 | 10.9% |
| $50 | $8 | $58 | $4.69 | $53.31 | 8.1% |
| $100 | $10 | $110 | $8.88 | $101.12 | 8.1% |
| $200 | $15 | $215 | $15.63 | $199.37 | 7.3% |
The effective fee rate decreases as the item price increases because the fixed fees ($0.20 listing + $0.25 payment) are amortized over a larger revenue base.
Etsy Plus Subscription: Worth It?
Etsy Plus costs $10/month and provides:
| Benefit | Value | Monthly Savings |
|---|---|---|
| 15 free listing credits | 15 × $0.20 | $3.00 |
| 50% off shipping labels | Varies | $5–$15 |
| Advanced shop customization | Free | — |
| Customer listing restock alerts | Free | — |
Break-even: If you list more than 50 items per month (50 × $0.20 = $10 in listing fees), the 15 free credits cover the subscription cost. At 75+ listings per month, you save money. The shipping label discount typically saves $5–$15/month for active sellers.
VAT on Etsy Fees
Sellers in the EU, UK, Norway, Australia, and New Zealand may be charged VAT (20–25%) on their Etsy fee bill. VAT is added to your monthly statement, not deducted per transaction. This means your actual fee cost is 20–25% higher than the calculator shows.
To account for VAT, multiply your total fees by 1.20 (EU standard rate) or your local rate. On $3.40 in fees, EU VAT adds $0.68, bringing total fees to $4.08.
